Transmission swap/96 Grand Cherokee

Can anybody tell me how hard it would be for me to put a standard transmission in place of an automatic.

That is…i want to take out the automatic and replace it with a standard

A nightmare. Forget it. And the end result will suck.

Not a good idea of a swap. Way to many problems to over come and list.

Who in their right mind would trade an automatic for a manual anyway?? If you like to play with a “stick”, get yourself a toilet plunger, mount it tio the floor and play with IT.

@EllyEllis Some people enjoy a stick shift, there’s a reason 85% of the Miatas on the road are manual. I do think some cars are better suited for automatics though, and I would rather have an automatic in a truck, as they tend to have heavy clutches and long throws when you’re shifting.

But in the OP’s case, they never made a U.S. spec ZJ with a manual transmission so it’s not a practical swap at all, as there will be a ton of custom fabricating involved, and nothing good will come of it.

What the heck does this mean? “and I would rather have an automatic in a truck, as they tend to have heavy clutches and long throws when you’re shifting”. –

@EllyEllis

It means that the clutch pedal is stiff and hard to depress, it may also have an odd engagement point. Long-throw means that there is a long distance (relatively) between the gears. A large pickup truck will need to have a large and likely heavy clutch to stand up to the abuse of towing/hauling, so it’s more of chore to drive, the shifter will also have a long throws since most people aren’t going to be power-shifting them.

On the flip side a car like an S2000 with have shifter with a very short throw and a lighter clutch with a quicker engagement. In my daily driver, I have a short-shifter installed, it makes for bolt-action-like shifting, which is fun IMHO.

I understand what you are saying, but, FoDaddy, the OP is talking about an automatic!! “and I would rather have an automatic in a truck, as they tend to have heavy clutches and long throws when you’re shifting.”

He has automatic, but he/she is inquiring about swapping in a manual (standard) transmission, and I was suggesting that he’s better off with the automatic given the type of vehicle he has.

Just replace the Jeep with a standard transmission SUV of another make if you must. But this scenereo has too many pitfalls.

FoDaddy, I understand what you are saying and agree wholehartily. In fact, I don’t want a manual in anything.

Tractors are better served by a manual.;=)

Righto @dagosa as is the aforementioned Honda S2000, never available with an automatic. So well designed, it doesn’t need the clutch to upshift or downshift with a skilled driver!
