I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla CE with around 61000 miles. The dealer suggests a transmission flush for $150 in addition to the usual scheduled maintenance for 60000. I have never flushed a transmission in any of my previous cars. Opinions, please.
what does the manual call for?..usually change the fluid at 60K unless under severe conditions then perhaps a flush. Usually the suggestion is to avoid flushing.
The maintenance schedule that came with the car will have a recommendation about replacing the transmission fluid. Do as the schedule suggests. Time or miles, whichever comes first.
Replacing automatic transmission fluid periodically is a good idea. Some people recommend doing it every 30K. It can’t hurt to have clean fluid in the transmission.
Automatic transmissions need to be serviced every 25-30k miles regardless of what the owners manual says. This means pan drop and filter changed (Where applicable), adjustments (Where applicable). As far as flushes go, I would only let a qualified trans shop or dealer do a flush ONLY if they drop the pan and change the filter FIRST. STAY AWAY from chain transmission shops and fast lube places.
transman
Transman has it right. I might push that to 40,000 miles, but then I have never owned an automatic.
I agree with the recommendations about changing fluid every 25-30k miles with 40k as Mr. Meeham mentions as being the upper limits and also agree that the pan should be dropped first.
On another board I related a story about a Ford dealer doing a flush only (no pan drop or filter change) on my son’s Lincoln and it opened up a real can of worms.
It’s debateable at this point as to whether the problems are really ironed out yet or not.
