Things to make standard

Genuine hand cranks to open and close windows. They always work.
Genuiine rubber floor mats on pickup trucks, so water runs out when you get in with your waders on.

I agree with 4 totally, the so called power outlets are not much better(at least they are sort of standard)-Kevin

The ā€œworkā€ trucks are sort of like that.my Dakota has manual everthing, but unfortunatly it has carpet and no standard floor mats-Kevin

If I ran the worldā€¦

All vehicles would be manufactured with stainless steel brake lines. This is a big issue in regions where salt is used on the roads.

Also, every new vehicle would be required to have a common computer connector (USB) that would allow vehicle owners to connect their own computer and read trouble codes. The output from the car would be standardized among all the manufacturers so that only one software program would be needed to read the codes. This shareware program would work with PCs and Apples.

Wow DrP.I like your post-these are excellent suggestions-Kevin

Exactly! I like a bench seat, a stick shift, and I can certainly make do with manual windows. Steel wheels and dogdish hubcaps are fine, too.

Manufacturers used to make cars like this, but dealers hated 'em because they didnā€™t make any profit on the useless options like alloy wheels, vinyl tops, etc. So dealers never ordered 'em, and manufacturers figured nobody wanted 'em. Or so it seems to meā€¦

All cars should have windshield wipers that can be set to at least three speed settings besides the usual fast and slow continuous settings. Also need a place to hang a litter bag

Some kind of an indicator, light or sign that shows following drivers that Iā€™m on ā€œcruiseā€. If Iā€™m following someone on ā€œcruiseā€ I could set mine and would be more relaxed.

I would like the climate control knob to have an indicator light that comes on when the air conditioner is running. Nearly all manufacturers turn on the A/C when you set the control to defrost, but the A/C may ALSO be running in a handful of other modes. If the car has an A/C light, it may be OFF when the A/C is actually running!

Unnecessarily running the A/C compressor when it is cold outside is dumb, wasteful, and reduces fuel economy. Most people think that the A/C only runs when you turn it on, but actually it runs behind your back in most cars. I hear it all the time- an SUV pulls into a parking lot in the middle of winter, and I hear the distinctive click of the A/C clutch engaging.

Iā€™ll bet that the Prius doesnā€™t run its A/C compressor all the time like most cars!
All I want is an indicator light that goes on to indicate I have selected a ā€œmodeā€ that runs the A/C, so I can select a different ā€œmodeā€ if I do not want to waste energy and money.

tire air compressor. save time, money and the environment.

1.)Distance warning and automatic breaking for front and rear (like Mercedes).
2.)Illuminated (LED) drivers cup holder to eliminate guesswork in the dark.
3.)Text/twitter/email/blogger messaging phone killer while moving. Pay attention to driving; thats what your supposed to do!
4.)Satelite/Bluetooth directions over your car radio.

Get rid of LCD displays for odometers. They are really hard to read in many ambient light conditions.

I know this suggestion will cause a lot of controversy, but here goes. Working for a police department in a small Colorado mountain town, I have to do daily breath tests on people who have had DUIā€™s or DUAIā€™s. In addition, my daughter-in-lawā€™s father was killed by a drunk driver when she was 4 years old (her mom was left alone with 3 little girls under the age of 6!) And, I, myself, was hit by a drunk driver 39 years ago and still suffer constant pain in my neck due to that rear-end collision. So, my idea for what I would like to see as standard on ALL vehicles is an ā€œintoxilyzerā€ that will not let you start the engine if your blood alcohol level is above the minimum. It would be simpleā€“just blow into the tube before turning the key to start the ignition. If you are clear, the car will start. Otherwise, you will not be able to drive until you are sober!

Automatically dimming sideview mirrors. My F-150 has a rearview mirror that automatically dims when there are bright lights behind me, but for some reason the side mirrors donā€™t work the same way. I get blinded when someone close behind me in the left lane has those really intense HID headlights, and have to raise my arm to shield my eyes, unsafely blocking my view of the mirror.

As an aside, how about a ban on those HID headlights? They are blindingly bright, and the bluish color is piercing in a way that induces migraine headaches, at least for me. Theyā€™re generally dangerous to all but the drivers of those cars. If you need lights that bright, you donā€™t see well enough to be driving at night.

If you have to raise your arm to sheild your eyes from the car next to you, then you donā€™t need the mirror, as you already know there is a car next to youā€¦ HID lights are fine from the manufacturer, but the aftermarket ones are usually way to glare inducing.

Standard items on a car should include lifetime brake pads, lifetime battery, lifetime tires, lifetime transmission fluid, wiring setup for trailer towing.

I may be the last remaining [male] driver who does NOT want ABS. I donā€™t trust a mechanical-electric-sophisticated-built-in system to handle skids. Besides, I donā€™t skid any more. I drive usually conservatively, especially on the freeway [a.k.a. highway]. I think keeping a long distance between mine and the vehicle
ahead of me is wise practice.

Put the gas filler hole on the same side as the drivers seat.

I will drink to that.

An oil reservoir similar to a radiator reservoir.
