True, I just did not include that in my comment. I forgot that some people would not pull off to the right!
Yes. It appears many truckers get tired and some may not see things early enough.
Though I wanted to get home, I had to stop and sleep in an improptu truckers’ rest area at Kit Carson. 7 semis passed by.
My fire department responded to a fatal semi crash on WB I-70. Only miles from his freight terminal, that trucker may have relaxed that he finally made it and fell asleep at the wheel.
Four crosses are visible on the west side of 65 mph US 287/ US 40 for this 8 fatality accident:
Do you just have a need to post fatal accidents just to depress people ? Things like that happen all over the world .
Sorry.
This happened not far from my left turn. Surprised it did not get more mention in the media. Worst vehicle accident in Colorado history?
Please tell me you hit your brakes to alert the drivers behind you for that 1/4 mile back and don’t just let off the gas and cost for that 1/8 mile NOT alerting the driver(s) behind you that you are slowing down before you finally use your turn signal after slowing down in that 1/8 mile for the remaining 1/8 mile…
You must alert the driver(s) behind you of your intentions and NOT just start coasting to a stop for a 1/4 mile leaving them to guess as to what you are doing before you finally decide to use your turn signal…
I’m not even going to fall for such nonsensical assumptions.
So you ride your brakes for the 1st 1/8 to let the drivers behind you know what your intensions are before finally using your turn signal???
I mean you are already going below the posted speed limit right??
660’ is a long time to make the drivers behind you that are already ■■■■■■ (ticked) off from you holding them up and now you are gonna make then slow down over 1,320’ before you make a turn…
If I were making a left onto the road at left of image,
Apples and oranges…I’m talking about a rural road with miles of visibility, where the vehicle behind you is as likely to be a fully loaded grain truck going to the elevator or a truck/trailer carrying a combine header to the next job. It takes a lot more fuel to accelerate a truck from 15mph to 60mph than it does to maintain speed, so I will do whatever I can to move out of their way.
And what exactly are turnpikes? I see that term used regularly by those of you back east, but what makes a turnpike different than a regular highway or freeway?
“Turnpike” usually refers to a tollroad in the East.
I think the last time a toll road (turnpike) was used in TN was in the 19th century…
here in the much ridiculed flyover state of Oklahoma we have an actual OKLAHOME TURNPIKE AUTHORITY that controls are toll roads.

NY state as the thruway authority and state troopers assigned on the thruway to police just the thruway (I-90 a toll road).

You do you.
I do what’s legal. I’ll gradually slow down in anticipation (look that word up) and make my left turn from the lane in the direction I’m going in.

I didn’t name the road. That’s what it’s called, so that’s how I refer to it.
And they used to be paved with wood planks. Not great but better than mud. In Sherman’s march north through Carolina, they cut trees and built their own road through the swamp.
There have been a few accidents where one truck rear-ended another* which was slowing because a car unseen ahead of the first truck was slowing to make a left turn.
You can come up with the most outrageous list of “What Ifs” and if the Asteroid had not hit the Earth, Dinosaurs would still rule the planet…
Here are a few of my own… All four of your tires could blow out at once, Your brakes could fail to stop you because something rolled under your brake petal and you could not depress the pedal, Your steering system might fail because a pin falls out, or your engine suddenly accelerates and it does not shut down even when you turn the key or push and hold the Start Button; and worse yet, you try to shift the car into Neutral but can’t because the accelerations jammed your shifter.
And right before you slam into the Big Rig Truck ahead of you, you try to pass the truck in the oncoming lane only to see a vehicle there, with the little heads of young children looking out the back window. The darn vehicle is in the oncoming lane slowing down to let the truck pass.
We can work the “What Ifs” all day and in most cases, you will be wrong.

The New Jersey Turn Pike is still a toll road, It was then (1951) and still is today (2025)
MA and NY still have toll roads, but they got rid of all the toll booths. Everything is electronic. NH is doing the same.
There seem to be a lot of toll roads or turnpikes in the eastern (or Northeastern) part of the country. Why is that? I mean, a toll on an interstate highway? How many times are drivers expected to pay for the same road?
They have introduced a few tolls in this area, most notable for bridges. But they are scheduled to decrease and eventually disappear when the original cost to build is paid off. I can’t imagine a permanent toll on an interstate highway or public road being permanent. That’s why we pay taxes.
Depend, our county eliminated tolls when the construction costs were paid. Maintenance is through other tax sources. As soon as I go into the next county the road becomes a toll road again, but in their defense, that county has been experiencing runaway growth over the past 40 years. My county waits until a road is grossly over capacity to begin planning new construction.
That part of Colorado only seems to make the news for a storm or a bad wreck. Family has roots in Flagler on I-70 with 2 generations homesteading. A tragedy for the families.
Co-worker was asleep at the wheel when his truck went into a tree at 50mph not yet 22.
