I’d have to review the writing of the document but seems to me it was no lowly clerk that took the notes but rather Jefferson or someone that wrote down every word spoken during the convention and compiled the document because of his command of the language and handwriting…
My reference was prof guelzo of Gettysburg college, but who cares?
No one said it wasn’t. The final document was taking the draft and removing all the notes and margins to make it look like an official document. The main qualification for this person is to have good penmanship. Based on the evidence at hand…it must have been the scribe who added it. None of the drafts that are preserved have that wording. The legal part of the document ends after Article VII. It’s also insignificant as far as the document goes. Adds no context or meaning to the constitution. It wasn’t until 50 years later that a pastor tried to say it was proof of God in the constitution. But that’s shot down so many times over the decades.
To keep this car related, every dollar that is used to pay for every vehicle on the road has the words “In God We Trust” The first use of this phrase was in 1862 at the beginning of the Civil War when religious sentiment was on an upswing and concerned Americans wanted the world to know what their country stood for.
The first coins that bore this phrase was the 2¢ coin and was first minted in 1863 and went into mass circulation the following year. And that’s my “Two Cents” worth…
Then in July 1955, President Dwight Eisenhower endorsed a law passed by a joint resolution of the 84th Congress, that requires the words ‘In God We Trust’ to appear on all American currency.
As for me, I am not particularly religious and do not subscribe to any particular affiliation, but I do believe that a people and a country that subscribes to a benevolent creator are far better than one that does not…
And to end on a car note… My '85 Corolla’s Oil Pressure Light started blinking yesterday while at an idle. The engine is tight and runs fine. The Oil/filter was changed two-months (about 150-miles ago), and the dip stick shows full. I will be going done to my favorite NAPA dealer for a new oil pressure sending unit and I will be paying for it with my hard-earned Greenbacks that have the expression “In God We Trust” printed on them…
“In God We Trust” was added to our currency in 1955. The same congress added the words “One Nation Under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance" the year earlier (1954)
