Engineers? Are you sure? Management makes decisions, engineers make recommendations. Tesla engineers may have suggested this implementation, and then again, they may not have. Management decided to do it, no matter who recommended it.

In my dev-shop, we prioritize dangerous problems above “features”, but even then, we have to stick to the schedule (more or less), so not everything gets done as engineers would want
