How can I fix a stuck coolant temperature gauge?

Its on a 1998 Mercury Mystique.

Perhaps. Try rapping on it. If that doesn;t work, try removing it and rapping on it with it at different angles.

If you are lucky, the sensor may be bad and you can just change that. If not, fixing the non essential (not needed to keep it running) is just tossing money out the window.
