Dear sir, i barely remember thee. I used to read them mostly every month but really cant recall anything of significance he said. I bought a new olds in 74 with the 350. Dont recall if i used 10-30 or 40, probably 40. No problems and retired it with about 240k. Biggest change was throwing out all the pennzoil about 1984. Not even in my lawn mower, open an engine up with that stuff and looked like the oil had never been changed.
Of course just my unprofessional opinion but ive learned a lot since i was a kid.
Dad was a Pennzoil man. I remember growing up, every car got Pennzoil 20W50 (Southern CA climate). Managed to get every car to over 200K without major engine repairs other than the typical GM nylon timing gears.
I never liked that though and used 10W30 on my first car, 77 Cutlass.
My brother in law used to tell me to get rid of that stuff but i ignored him. When i had to replace my diesel at 200k, i switched to rotella and mobil depending on the car.
Firestone does millions (6+million a year) of oil changes on most every year, make and model automobile on the roads, they switched over from Kendall to Pennzoil (mainly) in early 2016, not to mention how many oil changes Jiffy Lube does a year…
I have not heard of mass engine failures due to the use of Pennzoil being being used in most of their oil changes…

One thing missing from these recent articles is reference to the Strait of Homuz closure and its impact on synthetic base oil supply. The problem is bigger than ‘refiners can make more money selling gas and diesel’.
Me either, but we mainly delt with bulk oil, drums and cases by the pallet for the most part, all our Kendall products was bought through commercial oil supply places, and wasn’t available to the general public…
I don’t normally succumb to the panic buying but Covid taught me one thing, ignore the early warning signs at your own peril. I just went to the big box store and bought enough for an oil change in every vehicle. Some are due soon anyway.
There was a guy there asking his wife, do you see any that is on sale? I had to laugh. The shelves are already getting bare, who would put something like that on sale?
Yeah, it wasn’t too bad until a few days ago. Rerouting oil through pipelines to the Red Sea and recent blockade easement in the Strait of Hormuz had done a lot to mitigate the problems. Then the Houthis attacked the Saudis in Southwest Saudi Arabia and captured the island at the southern entry to the Red Sea. The Saudis may have some ability to attack the Houthis, but it’s likely that the US is on the hook to deal with this escalation.
Local gasoline price is $4.60/gallon, the same price I paid in 2022 and 2023. Without inflation adjustment.
During those years we were expected to start paying more as fossil fuel dependence was to be decreased. Discussions about “where will people with internal combustion engines be able to buy gasoline in years to come?”
0W16 motor oil was on backorder in 2022, wasn’t newsworthy at the time.
I panic bought during the Ebola scare, told myself never again. Then I found myself regretting not panicking buying in 2020.
Now my attitude is everybody for themselves. I bought over 400 dollars of oil in May when it was 25 a jug. Now its 35 a jug and I purchased another 350 dollars worth today.
All 0w20, dexos in various brands. I bought out our Walmart. None is available online. Im not playing around this time, I should have enough oil for 3-5 years.
But seriously, $750 will buy twenty-one 5 qt. bottles of Mobil 1, equaling 105 quarts.
That is enough for 13 oil changes for your truck. 97,500 miles. Do you spend all your time in the truck?
I bought a box of motor oil two years ago and haven’t used it all.
I like to be stocked up but gee thats a lot. I bought three for$115 and had two one hand plus a couple 5-30 for the small engines. But then there is always the risk of obsolescence. I had to sell my beloved pontiac and with it went two jugs of oil, three oil filters, two air filters, a partial gallon of dexcool, new left and right side mirrors because i kept hitting the side of the garage in a hurry and wanted one on hand, paint fir the rockers and new sheet metal, and a tank of gas.
I think im going to just turn in my tank of mig welding gas. I dont ever intend on doing any body work again. If you put things off long enough, the problem goes away.
