Suburban Tranny question

have 2003 1500 4wd, 185k, well maintainted.

Lately when I shift into reverse, it acts like it is still in neutral, then over some time, seems to ease into reverse. Worse when cold, but doing it more and more, and taking longer…

Do I need a trans rebuild?

Thanks, Preston

Classic signs of a clogged transmission filter.
You need to get the transmission fluid and filter changed right away.

This should be your forth tranny service coming up…You did numbers 1, 2, and 3 right??

yes–52k, 103k, 138k
#3 was a little early, so has been just about 50k since last one…

thanks
fingers crossed…will try this tomorrow. I suppose the big question is if it is clogged, what is doing the clogging??

and also, Why would reverse only be acting up??

Two things I see a lot of in these transmissions with this problem. First is the pump and second is the reverse input clutch. I’m willing to bet that the reverse circuit has low line pressures leading right to the pump. You have quite a few miles on this transmission but yes, it looks like rebuilding is going to be the cure here.
