I had the same problem your caller had with my Subaru Legacy Outback automatic transmission shifter. Mine’s a '98. I disassembled it. . . really easy to do. Turned out the oil they used in assembly had gotten gummy. I cleaned it out, and now it works well. If the problem with the shifter is worse when the car is cold than when it’s warm, that’s probably the problem, and very easy to fix with no parts.
