Problem shows to be evaporative emissions code–possible repair is the new gasoline filler tube and associated emissions stuff in that area (area is heavily rusted) estimate-$500.00. Today, the gas tank is giving off fumes (free check from mechanic)–replace tank (top rusted); He didn’t look at the repair manual, thinks the rear axle would need to be possible removed, cost a plenty. Should I take it to a large city and leave it on the street with the key in the door or drive it off a short pier into Lake Michigan?
It all depends on the condition of the rest of the car, and how diligently you have maintained it.
If this car is in otherwise decent shape (for a 9 year old vehicle), it would seem rather short-sighted to abandon it over a $500 repair bill.
