Starter runs all the time

89 Isuzu Trooper V6

About a month ago, I started my car and heard the starter motor running even thought I turned the key back and even when I turned it off. I took the key out of the ignition and had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop.

I figured it was the starter solenoid and I replaced the starter. The problem went away till just this weekend when it happened again.

When the key is NOT in the ignition and the clutch is NOT depressed, the starter motor cranks. When I disconnect the small white wire from the battery everything shuts off. If I just connect that white wire (big wire not connected) the starter clicks but does not turn.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

Thanks

Wayne

Additional info. I gave the starter motor a few whacks with a stick and it still happens. Could be I didn’t hit it hard enough though.

You said you replaced the starter, so why are you hitting it? Duh.

I think your problem may be in the ignition system itself.

There may be a short or perhaps a loose connection in the key cylinder.
