I put a rebuilt starter on my standard 1994 Nissan pick up 4cy. Got starter from auto zone. The starter gets red hot with just one try. It makes a loud “Clunk” sound. The positive wire gets to hot to touch. Whats going on?
The starter gets RED HOT? You might want to check and see if the engine is siezed up.

Thanks for your reply. I can push the truck off and it will start.
Then you must have gotten a defective starter.

There is a internal short in the starter. If you have a seperate starter solenoid from the starter motor then you most likely twisted the bolt head connection on the starter motor when you connected the lead to it and the hot lead is touching the case inside the motor.
