Slipping Transmission 2004 Maxima

When the car is cold it runs fine. After driving for 10-15 minutes the transmission slips, while driving the engine revs and then engages again.I have only noticed the disengaging/engaging as speeds less than 40 MPH. When the car is in neutral and placed into drive it may take several seconds to engage which happens about 60% of the time. Could this be a sensor failure or time for a new transmission?

Have you checked the transmission fluid? Note its level, color & smell. How many miles are on it and what has the service history of the transmission been?

You’ll need to have a good, local, independent transmission shop evaluate it, including a scanning for error codes. But I’d say that, unless your fluid is low right now then you’re probably looking at the new transmission option. (And if the fluid is low your transmission may be damaged anyway from the slipping).

I just had the transmission fluid changed today. The car has 125,000 miles. The problem started about two weeks ago. Thank you for your reply.

I’m sorry to say that usually by the time the transmission starts to have problems. It is too late for a simple fluid change to fix it. How many times as the transmission fluid been changed in the 125,000 miles before this? It is a shame that auto makers no longer seem to recommend servicing the transmission which could prevent many of the problems if only the maintenance was done. I guess the manufacturers feel that by the time you find out there is a problem, you will just dump it and buy a new car.
