Is the GM 6 banger engine, as would be found in an 02 Monte Carlo, one of the types of engines which self destruct (piston hits valve) when the timing belt breaks?
According to the Gates timing belt guide, the timing belt engines in Monte Carlo were from 1995 to 1997.
As mentioned by the first poster the 3.4 DOHC was the only engine with a timing belt. The 3.1 and 3.8 use a timing chain.

Many thanks for the responses; I can rest easy now that a belt replacement is not imminent.
Please do not think that a timing chain will not require replacement also.
Why did you need to come here to find that out? Haven’t you read your owner’s manual?
