Service engine soon light

,

I have a 2001 BMW Z#. The “Service Engine Soon” light has come on. What does that mean. What would they do if I could afford to take it to the dealer

Just had a call from a friend with a 1997 Taurus. He asked me the same thing.

The shop will have to determine what the problem is from reading the codes and checking out the fuel system, electrical system, air intake, catalytic converter, etc.

Please tell us what maintenance you have done so far and at what mileage. If all maintenance is performed on time the light will not go on.

You can start by making sure your gas cap is tight; this sometimes causes the light to go on.

You don’t need to go to the dealer if you can find a good independent shop that has BMW experience.

Good luck.
