For the past day or so I’ve heard a scraping sound from under the car. I’ve looked under the car and can’t see any problem. I went to a local garage and one of the mechanics looked under the car and couldn’t see anything. The car is a 99 Toyota Corrola
Under what circumstances does this “scraping sound” occur. Please be as specific as possible.
The source might be in one of the wheel wells, or on the chassis side of one of the wheels.
Specifics: What speeds? Anything to do with going over bumps or turning? Engine/exhaust cold or hot? Is the sound constant or does it change with speed? Is it a constant scraping, a pulsing sound that correlates to tire rotation, or something irregular? Can you describe the sound: metal on metal, metal on something softer, something else? If nothing is dragging on the ground, it might be a tire hitting a loose fender liner on a bump or turn, or a loose exhaust heat shield rubbing against the body. It’s not a brake pad wear indicator starting to squeal, is it?
Have you noticed?
Try lightly pressing the brake pedal when the scraping noise is loudest. If that stops or greatly reduces the noise until you let up on the brake then it could be the brake wear indicator(s) as suggested by MrPhil. Simply have them checked.
I had my mechanic check the car today, and it turns out that the baffle that holds the exhaust system had completely rotted, and my right rear wheel was bent and the tire almost flat. The mechanic asked me if I remembered going into a pot hole and I had on Friday. thanks for you help
