I know when I was a kid, I always heard that somehow it used less fuel to leave a diesel engine running, than to shut it off and restart. It never made sense to me, as idling the engine by definition wastes fuel.
Was that ever true? Is it true now, with modern diesel engines?
One bit of rooftop cargo I like when truck-camping is a tent-material-roof that you can splay out at the campground to make a covered front porch. Makes the morning coffee experience more pleasant. Some folks go whole hog and put an entire tent on the roof, but that’s a little too much.
I do a lot of backcountry 4 wheeling in bear country. If you have anything that is considered food, or even smells attractive, a bear would have no difficulty climbing that jeep to get into that tent. We don’t even keep a tube of toothpaste anywhere near where we sleep. I’ve seen the result of people being ignorant or just lazy and it’s not pretty. Bears can be quite, how shall we say, disrespectful, after they get what they want. It’s bad enough when the animals chew on your pack straps to get at the salt…
IMO the Buick Rendezvous was a decent looking car even though it was almost identical to the Aztek. I also thought our 2003 Olds Silhouette was far and away the best looking of the litter compared to the 2003 Venture and Montana.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition received warnings from the locals near the headwaters of what is now the Missouri River to stay away from the brown bears. The expedition laughed since they had powerful rifles and didn’t heed the warning. During the first encounter with a grizzly, the bear charged and the people shot it, over and over again. It finally went down near the group. They decided that next time they’d go around the bear, way around.
