If anyone is planning a road trip and expect to sleep in their vehicle, I recommend that you purchase a Rand MCNally road atlas at WalMart. The WalMart version ($7) lists the locations of all the Walmarts and gives an address for all those within two miles of an interstate. You will find a group of RV’er and travelers in the back corner of any WalMart parking lot every night. I stayed an many Camp WalMarts on my last cross country.

The WalMart parking lots provide some security as well as the security of having fellow travelers nearby. Many WalMarts are open all night so you have bathrooms and supplies nearby. The only downside is that the parking lots are well lit so you will need some kind of screening for your windows. WalMart allows this type of camping, I don’t know how they would feel about a tent though.
