Responses to Beta Feedback

Enhancements / fixes added recently:

Breadcrumb navigation and descriptive header label when browsing a specific topic and then when in a specific discussion - you can navigate up to the topic level without having to return to the topic index (this was a specific request here in the feedback area)

Added a “Submit a Car Question” link at the top of the page. This seems to have reduced the confusion for newbies with car questions. Definitely a helpful suggestion (again, a request made here in the feedback area).

Turned off anonymous posting - insert cheers and applause here (yeah, right). Ultimately, Car Talk staff would like to keep the barriers low for people participating, but moderating out spam gets old. Until we address that for non-registered posting, we’ll require simple registration for all comments.

Made some minor formatting changes, like having the #comments not look so darn clickable.

As usual, constructive feedback is always welcome. -keith

I just noticed that you can highlight text and click the bold button and now it works. I don’t think it had been working that way.

Now if I can just get this cast off my are and type two handed again.

I am new to this type of forum and may have done something wrong but… I have no comments to my question on 8-7-07 re: main computer error on 2001 Jeep grand cherokee. Just wanted some advice.

Some helpful and alert community members have pointed out that the pop ups in some browsers as you leave and enter our secure areas can be misleading. This is frustrating, of course, since you can’t tell what’s happening, while we’ve made significant efforts to secure our users’ personal data.

The car talk community, by default, submits data on the login forms, registration form, and edit profile form securely using standard, SSL browser encryption.

You may notice, however, that once you’ve hit the ‘login’ button, you receive an initial alert that you’re entering a secure area. If you agree, the data is transferred securely. Once the data is received, our server redirects you back to the non-secure server where you can read and post messages, etc. At this point, you will receive a second alert (the confusing one) that you are being redirected (back) to an insecure area.

This occurs because we have chosen not to secure all non-personal information around the site, since it slows down page loads and requires secure browsing for even casual and anonymous visitors, which seems like overkill to us.

As usual, we welcome your feedback.

A piece of this has been fixed - turns out it was an IE bug, so the warning you get now is not of the ugly, world-is-going-to-end type, but simply that you are being re-directed.
