Repair shop messin'w/my brakes &my head!

took the 89 corolla in just to hve them ck the brkes they tell me the front brks have 70% left but that the calipers (espec. the rt. one) are sticking & the rotor is uneven indicating overheating they want $600 just for front brake job! -car doesnt pull, grind or squeak-i do a lot of downhill driving the pedal doesnt go to the floor or anything just took it in thinking it might need an “adjustment” cause the pedal seemed to not be as “tight”
-i took it for a 2d opinion at another shop he told me he couldnt see anything wrong–could driving a longer distance to the first shop cause the problem to occur? the 2d shop is only a cple blks from my hse. The 1st shop charged me $32 for the inspection–is it possible they did a more “thorough” job in cking than the 2d shop which didnt chrge me anything? very puzzling…

Drive it for awhile and then get out and feel the front wheels with the side of your hand. Don’t feel the brakes - feel the wheels. If a wheel is overly hot, it means a caliper is sticking. Uneven rotors do not necessarily indicate overheating.

BTW, please use standard English, not txt shrthnd on this forum. Makes it much easier for us old farts to read.

Disc brakes are self adjusting. Since you have an 89 Corolla I will assume you have rear drum brakes. If your brakes are not as “tight” I would start looking at the rear drum brakes for wear and adjustment. Do you use the handbrake (parking brake) daily? That is what keeps the rear drums in adjustment. I am not excluding the possibility that the front calipers are sticking and I think shadowfax’s advice is good, especially for an old fart.
