Found the car of my…needs! A nice hybrid. But I may have to wait 3-5 months for it.
My current 35-year-old car is dying and is starting to feel unsafe, and I’m not willing to put another dime into it - I’m donating it to my local NPR station!
I could rent a car from Enterprise for several months, but what do I do about insurance? Should I keep my current car with its low-budget insurance and wait to donate it until I get my new car?
On another thread, some claimed, “You can buy “any car” liability insurance to avoid the high rates charged by the rental companies…” True?
Check out how much coverage you have on a rental car with your current insurance, and with the credit card you’d use for the rental. Then ask your insurance agent about the ‘any car’ insurance option.
Your current insurance would likely cover an extended rental, but you need to maintain your current vehicle. Don’t forget that liability coverage is as important as vehicle damage. Rental insurance is only for damage to the rental vehicle and the rents lost during repair. It does not give you liability and does not meet the requirements for an umbrella policy. So park the car until the new one comes in but discuss with your agent. My license lapsed 50 years ago.
