Recommeded procedure for breaking-in a new diesel engine

Click-n-Clack a while back recommended changing oil/filter on a new gas engine after driving no more than 500 miles. Does this apply to breaking in a new diesel engine like on a VW or E320?

IMHO a new engine, whether it’s a new car or a freshly rebuilt engine, should get an early oil change.
Your break-in is going to be pretty much done by the 25 mile mark anyway.

The answer is in your owner's manual. Read it and follow it. An oil change at 500 miles will not likely hurt, but it is not likely to help. I like to add one change but not at 500 miles. Today's cars have longer oil changes for good reasons. Some manufacturers use a different oil for the first fill, many don't.

I bought an new 2002 VW diesel, the specified oil changes were at 5,000 10,000 and every 10,000 after that. I followed it. At 65,000 I have yet to have measurable oil usage in 10,000 miles.

Note: If you have a VW Diesel, you must use approved oils. You don't need to get it from VW and the requirements are different from year to year, but it must meet their specs or you can expect trouble. Read the owner's manual.
