I HAVE A REAR SEAL LEAK ON 99 JEEP GR. CH.
iS IT SAFE TO LET IT GO TILL SPRING? AS ITS CHRISTMASTIME AND $$$ ARE KIND OF TIGHT
Hey Lug Nut, Rear Of What?
Is It The rear main engine seal, transmission?, transfer case, differential? Tell us which one and if you can describe how much is leaking, drips, puddles, etcetera, and we’ll give it our best shot.
If it’s EASY to keep the oil level full, 1/2 to 1 quart between fuel fill-ups, then let it ride until money and down-time are sufficient.
My shop has been telling me “rear main seal” for two years now ( 92 Explorer 4x4 ) but is merely heavy seepage , ie; no need to add oil between oil changes, just a quart low at oil change time.
Yah huh ? The rear of what ?
Ken, I Don’t Do Jeeps. That Doesn’t Stop Me From Being An Expert, Though!
I either know what I’m talking about or disregard this completely!
Notice that my first item was “rear main seal”. I just wanted to be sure it’s not coming from the rear of the ashtray or tranny or some place.
I’m not arguing , I’m agreeing ! Good point there, but only after I typed my reply did I see the great point you made to the OP, so I thought I’d back you up and re-iterate the major un-answered criteria…the rear of what ? I’m not Jeep either. I’m a Ford dealer parts man,29 years, And un-provided obvious information is a brand-blind thorn in every partsman’s side.
Have you noticed that the OP still has not answered our inquiries ?
The 4.0l engine is notorious for developing rear main seal leaks. Most times they are more of a nuisance than anything, leaving a drop of oil every so often on the driveway (not even every day). I have a slow leak on mine, but after 3 years have still not gotten around to replacing the seal. I have no appreciable oil loss between changes.
You have to drop the oil pan and remove the cap off the rear main bearing to replace this 2 piece seal. I have been putting it off because I just haven’t felt like putting the Jeep up on stands for a couple days, and it’s not bad enough to pay somebody to do the work for me right now.
If you didn’t notice any oil on your driveway/garage floor, it’s just a slow seeping right now. You can just keep track of the oil level and fix it when you have time/money.
I Used To Manage A Volkswagen - Mazda Parts Department For A Few Years
My only local Ford dealer is Ford - Jeep! They used to have Jeep before it was a Chrysler car and they still have it. They used to work on Eagles, too. The only local Chrysler dealer, just down the road, is Chrysler - Dodge.
