The boys muddled up that explanation. On a station wagon without a deflector, the rear wind flow is always turbulent from the roof line down.

Here is an interesting YouTube video of wind flow over the rear window of a Toyota Corolla with and without vortex generators. The flow is very chaotic without the generators.

Great thread. The value of vortex generators has long been accepted on aircraft. Perhaps we’ll see them on cars in the not too distant future.
