That sound like the valve cover gasket is leaking oil into the spark plug wells.

Rather than a head gasket problem, this does sound like a valve cover gasket problem, and that is a much better scenario for the OP.

I doubt that coil gunk is the source of the problem, but good idea to take it to a specialist and get their opinon what’s causing the symptom. I expect you already know that at 290K, there’s many possibilities for malfunctions.
