I use a floor jack on one side of the vehicle, jacking it up beyond the jack stand. I then put the jack stand under something safe, then release the jack a little bit until the car rests on the stand. The jack is now ready to jack the vehicle up again at the push of a handle. I wouldn't want to "hurry-up" and try to get a jack under the stand or the ramp if something happens. Ramps are hit n' miss, you almost always need someone to help line 'em up and there is no safety of having the jack there as a failsafe if the ramp fails. Do they fail? Yes, I've had one collapse once. The most important thing to stress here, as others mention, is SAFETY. Machines and devices have no conscience and bodies and body parts are harmed quite easily. Be safe. Enjoy the oil change . . .I'm 50 and I hope to "wrench" my cars for many more years, this forum can help a lot with your novice exposure, so give it a try. Rocketman
