Rabbit problems

I have a 1984 VW Rabbit, 4 cyl., 5 spd, that chokes off when I slow down to stop

At that age lots of possibilities. How long have you owned it? When’s the last time it got new plugs/wires/cap/rotor? Fuel filter? Replaced the injector O-rings?

You might clarify if this Rabbit is a diesel, carbureted Rabbit, or has CIS fuel injection as the cause could be vastly different.

If it’s the normal CIS Rabbit then some of the most likely possibilities could be a vacuum leak (CIS does not tolerate vacuum leaks well at all), control pressure regulator problem,
or a fault with the fuel distributor.
