There are a number of really bad statistics involving anything automotive and this may be one of them. I assume the number in the 3rd column is the model year. According to that a 2001 Chevy pick up is more likely to be stolen than a 1999 or 2002. The problem is that the number of a particular model year sold can vary greatly from year to year, so the number of a particular year on the road varies accordingly. If there are 150,000 2001 model years on the road but 120,000 2003 model years, then there are going to be more thefts of the 2001, but the 2003 model year may be more likely to be stolen.
The numbers are probably close to the same for similar model years. The point is most targeted vehicles for auto theft have mechanical security measures: an ignition lock that can be defeated with destructive tools. Vehicles with electronic security features are less attractive to thieves.
A mechanical key with a security chip in it works well. A thief has to defeat both technologies.
Personally Iâd rather install my own electronic security and have a regular key that I can get copied anywhere, and not have to worry about trying to program a junk yard ECU to the chip in the key in the future.
My car getting stolen is the least of my worries.
Well, thatâs a key point here. This internet chat makes it so easy to develop new things to worry about, or yell about, or get all judgmental about. All of that stuff is a waste of our time, and can be a real plague on our lives. Once in a while itâs helpful just to look around where ever you are and notice that no one stole your car today, the person in front of you drove quite reasonably, all the cars on the freeway are going pretty fast and traffic is flowing well. You might want to note that your car with 55,000 miles on it still drives well, starts easily in the morning and looks pretty good. And, like me, you might also note that for some strange reason your driversâ license says youâre 78 years old.
It lies.
My 1st car was a '69 Bug! My starter gave out and I found out it was so easy to push start I never fixed it! I always tried to park facing slightly down hill!
