Programming the car's computer

I have a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country with the engine light on. The fault code says the Power Control Module is bad.

I know I need the dealer to flash the EEPROM with the VIN and miles. I’m stationed in Heidelberg Germany and I’m concerned over whether the German dealers have the same software as the US dealers. I don’t want them loading Europe specifications into my US car.

Then have Uncle Sugar ship the car back to the states (where it belongs) and have a Stateside dealer replace the PCM if one is still available…

Does the car still drive normally?? How many miles on it?

Knowing nothing about this, I would ask if the correct program could be emailed to the dealer. The Euro spec would not seem appropriate anyhow if the odo must read miles. Could the Euro program do until you got your vehicle back to the US?

Just as you can send an email around the globe, the dealer can access the software program from the manufacturer’s server. As long as they have the capable data transfer device and a computer that can access Chrysler’s server, you should be golden.

BTW what problem arose that caused you to take the van to have the codes read and the diagnosis that the PCM was defective? Just curious.

Chrysler has a rep in Europe. Number is +49-6173-470256. Tech guys are at last three numbers 281/282. They confirmed that the software is by VIN and pulled from Chrysler, so should be no worries.

To answer Researcher’s question. The engine light came on. On Chryslers, you put the OD into trip mode and flash the ignition three times and codes will pop up. P060.1 happened to be this code. I took it to the dealer, and they confirmed the problem.

To answer Caddyman’s question. The car does run normally and you get no other faults. The concern is you potentially have no control over fuel/air mixture and could burn out your cadialatic converter, which is real bad news. The car has 130,000 on it. It is outside of warranty. The car will never return to the states. I’ve replaced the entire power steering system TWICE and will just get a new car upon return.

I noticed one item in the P0601 DTC set condition “Internal Checksum for software failed, does not match calculated value” Did the dealer provide the option and hold out any hope for fixing the PCM by reflashing the present EEPROM with the original software pulled from Chrysler?

Just an idea.

I know I am not answering your question about how to flash your PCM but keep a skeptical nature to the module being bad and do some testing to see if an incorrect mixture is reaching the cat.

Vehicle diagnostic system can put out a failure code that is not accurate and is due too the limitations that the system has by design.

The fact that a scanner can still talk to to module and that the module can still talk to other modules is a clue that that “I am defective” report from the module is in error.

Is P0601 the only code present dealing with the modules health? P0601 translates too Internal Control Module Memory, Check Sum Error, there are some even more drastic PCM error codes.

In Germany, fixing anything is not the way they do business. They just replace. It is their way.
