mechanic says I need to drain, flush and refill power steering system. A 2004 Ford Focus with 54,000 miles. He says Fords are hard on ps fluids I have driven Fords for almost 40 years and never changed fluid or ever had a ps problem. I keep it full and add fluid as needed during oil changes.

Ummm…I think that you might want to look for a new mechanic.
I have never heard of any one make of car that is “hard on ps fluid”, as compared to other makes of cars.
That being said, I do like to change my PS fluid every 60k miles, but this mechanic’s statement makes me skeptical about what other procedures he might be pushing that aren’t really necessary.
