Porsche's newly-patented SIX STROKE engine

If I remember correctly whale oil additives were required in limited slip differentials in the 50&60s.

As I recall, automatic transmission fluid was largely whale oil until sometime in the '60s.

Well good thing I donā€™t have any cats on my car thenā€¦

Thanks, it has been years since I bought any, donā€™t remember the exact name only what I told the GM parts guy when I ordered it, but the GM E.O.S. could have definitely been the name of itā€¦

Funny though, I used it to build a Mazda Protege 1.8 DOHC, didnā€™t use the whole bottle, changed the oil after 500 miles and the customer said it never ran that good from new, also no cat damageā€¦ I drove it around for a few days with the hood breaking in the engine, it did run pretty good for what it was, fun little 5 speed manualā€¦ It had jumped timing and some idiot put a timing belt on it and bent ALL 16 valves, I bought all 16 from Mazda and took the head to the best head builder anywhere close, he said he had never seen one bend all 16, I said well you have nowā€¦ He decked and checked and did the valve job, I built the rest at home, including new rings and bearingsā€¦

The limited slip additive for the Mopar Sure Grip was Whale Spermā€¦

Anybody remember the old 8 3/4 cone sure grips, with no clutchā€™sā€¦??

If I can ever find a good set of spiders and side gears, I can rebuild it, mine have a few pits in one eachā€¦ Huge gears and spider pinā€¦

Thatā€™s me! Thatā€™s me!,

How long is this post going to last? Eat your hearts out, guys.

Iā€™ve heard that Sperm-Whale oil was used (and may still be used) for limited slip differential additives. I didnā€™t realize it was the whaleā€™s sperm though. I thought is was oil processed from the dead whale.

Just curious , why do you think that post would be removed? Itā€™s car related and contains no personal reference or attack.

And you were correct.

I guess I could always send a sample of my parts washer fluid out to be tested for Whale Sperm to see if any was remaining from the old CONE style sure grip unitā€¦ lol

Yep, itā€™s sperm whale oil. Not whale spermā€¦or are you just having a joke

It is what all the old school Mopar guys I have ever known over the years including parts managers at Dodge dealers has always called it, it is made from whale sperm, not sure what the joke isā€¦ Look at most any A/B body Mopar forum and it is still called Whale Sperm additive for the limited slip diffs from back thenā€¦

I have never heard ā€œWhale Spermā€ being used in anything else but sure grip additive, so it may have only truly been used in the slip additive and all the rest of the lubes were Sperm Whale Oilā€¦ Very little if any info is available just on the old school additive onlyā€¦

I know that during the big Chrysler fire years ago that a ton of information was lost forever, example the Chrysler F-bodyā€™s production info has been lost forever, we know how many total and a small break down of wagon, 2 door, 4door and what engine of each were produced but the break down of options % numbers (AC, interior etc) have all been lost forever, I have seen them (my friend had a copy and probably still does boxed up who knows where) but before the internet, so before they were backed up, the fire wherever it was burned all that information (donā€™t remember off the top of my head and not looking it up)ā€¦

So the whole additive ingrediencies breakdown may have been lost alsoā€¦

I looked it up. Sperm oil is from the spermaceti organ in the whale, used in making sound. It isnā€™t sperm. I can see from the organ name how that mistake might occur. I thought sperm oil came from rendered blubber too.

Yep, not sperm. Oil from sperm whales.

I thought this sounded familiar. Using Georgeā€™s favorite search function, I found this, including discussion of sperm whale oil:

I remember it but never used it. I didnā€™t start building engines until late 2000ā€™s through early 2010ā€™s and the spring pressures in the majority of the builds were too high for that - always used a dry-film moly. You can use just about anything for valve spring pressures up to 100 closed/280 open and be alright.

Like I had already said, it was only used in Mopar Sure Grip additive, never heard of it used in any other fluids, nor used by GM or Ford, so we are probably talking about two different tingsā€¦Apples to Orangesā€¦
I can not find Anything about just the additiveā€¦

Even my Master Transmission builder teacher for Automotive Technology talked about it being used in Mopar rear-ends only, and Never mentioned it being used in Transmissions everā€¦
