Pontiac Fiero Starter

I have replaces three starters in three months. I think the solenoid keeps going out. The car is a 1986 6 cylindar five speed, with air conditioning.

Any idea what the issue may be?

That V6 is packed in there pretty tightly, isn’t it? How close is the exhaust system to the starter?

Perhaps the starters are getting overheated.

By the way, I’ve seen Fieros with V8s shoehorned into them. That’s a REALLY tight fit.

Have you been having the old starters bench tested?

That could be the case, what should I do to reduce that?

No, I have bought the starter with the lifetime warrantee and have been replacing them with just the labor time involved.

You’ll have to devise a heat shield of some sort.

Re overheating, if the exhaust is near the starter a heat shield may have been on the starter from the factory and lost when left on the core in an earlier replacement. I see many cars with missing shields.

You might want to try a new starter. You are not having good luck with the rebuilt ones. (Do the heat control first.)

The catalytic converter is right next to it, should I wrap it somehow?
