Carl Icahn is selling Pep Boys to Mavis Tire for $700 million all cash.
Manny, Moe, and Jack could have been rich! 
Now, Mavis can now lay claim to TWO of the bottom-of-the barrel-rated tire chains.
Does Pep Boys sell parts anymore. We only have one in my area, and it hasn’t sold parts for several years now. It’s strictly service.
Pep Boys itself does not sell parts anymore, generally they rent (sub lease?) the front out to whatever parts chain takes the available space 1st…
While offloading the operational automotive repair business, Icahn strategically retained ownership of the highly valuable real estate previously transferred from Pep Boys… So even though it looks like he is loosing money on the deal, he will make up for it (for now anyway) by leasing the building to Mavis, and depending on the parts side of it, leasing it to a parts house also… In it for the long game it seems…
In my area, their parts/accessories department is run by Advance Auto. This partnership (?) might be different in other parts of the country.
I’m not a fan of Icahn, I was a pilot for TWA. He was not interested in running an airline, just lining his pockets.
Pep Boys does service and Advance Auto does parts in Central Maryland. This is only important for the Pep Boys stores that sold parts to begin with. There is one not far from me. There is also a stand alone Advance Auto nearby too. Both are still open.
AAh yes Mavis Tire , now there is a real quality . They will sell you everything you don’t really need !
The company that operates as mavis tire owns several chain repair shops that kept their identity. National Tire and Battery being one. Gives the company a west coast presence. Nearest pep boys seems to have turned the retail area into the customer lobby. O’Reilly auto parts is next door. I’ve been in that area to visit specific stores, never knew there was a pep boys on that road.
Not sure what happened to Pep Boys. There are plenty of auto parts stores that are successful. I remember back in the mid 80’s in Richmond, VA there was an old Pep Boys with the old sign. Had been around forever.
A few years ago Advance Auto became the biggest parts store when they bought CarQuest. I have a CarQuest a few miles from me, they’re my favorite parts store. I used to like Napa but the local ownership changed and their prices went way up. I also have an Autozone near me that I use once in a while.

As much as I dog on AZ and their overall junk parts, I will have to say, at least precovid, their Duralast GOLD brake pads are pretty good pads, rest were junk, but I will give credit were credit is due…
From what other mechanics have told me in my area, Pep Boys pay structure for techs was not very good, and they would not even allow a mechanic to work on their own vehicle, even with a properly written repair order, someone else had to do the work they needed/wanted… I just don’t think they could keep good help, and or good mechanics even wanted to work there… I never confirmed any of it, but they all said pretty much the same way…
I do remember we had a few service manager meetings about taken over Pep Boys and how it would affect us, but then Mr Deep Pockets cut a bigger check and bought them out from under us…
At 1st they would remain mainly the same and continue running like as normal, like Wheel Works did and Tire Plus does (separate from us), and we as service managers were worried about having to deal with their warranties (joining our nation wide warranties) and what nots… We were going to slowly change them all over to FS’s and use the parts showroom over to a customer lounge…
I’ve had plenty of bad experience with Duralast parts
They just don’t fit properly
And they just don’t work worth a D A R N
Not in my area. All National Tire and Battery are now Mavis.
My last two purchases of Duralast Gold pads did not fit the calipers by a long shot. I had to grind down the “ears” on all the pads. Very disappointing, they used to be perfect fit. Just junked my last Trailblazer so likely last time for those pads as well…
Well it has been awhile since I had to use them, at least 7+ years ago now…
