Ok so some Air Conditioning retrofit advice please!

I have a 1992 Ford Tempo GL with 83,000 miles on it. I Just got the vehicle. Someone suggested that the reason it is experiencing intermittent cold/hot periods is perhaps not a refrigerant issue. In any case its better to retrofit so I am trying to do this as much on my own as possible.

I can see that I can take the car to a mechanic that actually would pay me for the r12 or do it for free and vacuum out the system. At that point I would then just need the kit with the fittings and r134a correct? Would I still need gauges or could I use the gauge that is in the kit?

You need a proper analysis for a proper repair. Intermittent problem could be a blend door!

It could have leaked down and cause the on/off condition. The test for leaks is easy for an AC shop to do. There are some questionable fittings on Tempos.

If you want the AC to work correctly and reliably after a retrofit you should take the car to an AC shop and let them do the work. This is not a DIY job.
