Oil and Filter Discussion: 2022 Kia Seltos EX

Hijacking this thread a little.

A guy that works for me is looking at a new 2023 Toyota Crown. The oil recommendation for that vehicle is 0W-8. I’ve heard of 0w-16. Started doing research on the 0W-8…Dealers in the US can’t even get it. I told him 0W-16 should be fine, since that’s the recommended oil for the 2023 Venza and Rav-4 with the EXACT SAME ENGINE.

Looks like a play by Toyota to get people to use the dealer shop for oil changes. If they recommend 0W-8 they will make sure the dealers have it.

Yes, it IS a viscosity rating, by definition. WHERE do you GET this misinformation??

The rating comes from measuring the kinematic viscosity at 40 C and at 100 degrees C degrees per SAE specification with additional data from the Cold Cranking Simulator run from -5 C to -30 C.

OR…just use 0w-16 and the customer won’t be the wiser.

I think Toyota will provide it - and charge more for it.

It’s not. It is a specification that has two viscosity ratings.

That chart you linked to is nice. 80W90 gear oil has similar viscosity characteristics as SAE 20W50 engine oil.

You contradicted yourself here.
