Not Much Reason To Buy A Manual, Except To Be A Stubborn Curmudgeon

I’m not noticing any shaking of the wheel on any modern automatics when stopped. I haven’t for many years.

In the quest for that tiny bit of better mileage, designers have refined the torque converters to where the engine transmits so little energy through the TC that many of todays cars will even roll backwards on a slight incline when you take your foot off the brake. In the old days, like in my '64 Fairlane, we used to expect a car with and automatic to creep forward when removing our foot from the gas.

B.L.E., you have my sincere condolences. I hope it’s an injury that’ll heal. Sincere best.

Thanks. It’ll heal, its mostly just a bad sprain. It even hurts a little to turn the key to start the car.
Today, there is a registered trap shoot near San Antonio that I had marked on my calendar. I think I’m going to go anyway. I shouldered my shotgun at home and went through the motions of shooting and it doesn’t seem to be too uncomfortable.

I’ve had injuries like that which have made it nearly impossible to drive and do things like basic yard work, but for some strange reason I was still able to hit a golf ball.

Perhaps you could temporarily attach a gun stock to your shifter.

Reminds me of the graphic T shirt "Sick day " I have noticed a lot of Handicapped people around here that drive step ladder 4wds and can still hunt and fish in places were the average person fears to tread . Never underestimate the pain killing effects of pleasure (some pay for it on the way home )

It wasn’t too bad, I could even drive fairly comfortably and the sprained right wrist didn’t seem to affect my shooting. I shot 89/100 in 16 yard singles and 87/100 in 20 yard handicap. A double-A shooter I’m not.
Also, my cell phone rang in the middle of one of my rounds of trap and it was the boss with a question about something at work.

It’s funny how we will hunt, fish, or ski in weather we would never work in, bringing home meat we would never buy in a supermarket.

I drive a Mazda6 with a “semi-automatic” (and I’m a Democrat). The transmission is an auto but I can slide it into a “manual mode” that lets me shift manually with either the floor shifter or paddles on the steering wheel. The manual mode is lots of fun on winding mountain roads but nothing delivers better gas mileage than the automatic shifting itself for me. And the manual mode is not much fun at all when stuck in traffic.

Kevin, as someone with a walking disability that doesn’t show when I’m standing straight, I urge you to reconsider the criteria you use to judge people’s handicap status. In order to get a permit, states require a doctor to validate the disability. Unless you get a MD and an opportunity to examine the people you speak of, give them the benefit of the doubt.

Disabled people own trucks too. I recently met a man who lost both legs in Vietnam with an adapted 4x4 Dodge pickup. He’s become quite adapt at climbing in and out. I know another who had endured four reconstructive back surgeries and will never be out of pain who fished his whole life, had his own boat, until he couldn’t drive anymore.

On “good” days I take my cane and hobble for a walk around the block with the aforementioned man. On bad days I cannot leave the house. On his bad days he cannot leave the house either.

If I have to park in the middle of a parking lot, I cannot carry my purchases from a store. I cannot even carry a head of lettuce without my spine becoming compressed and extreme pain. I carried a painting in a frame for a friend and ended up in the hospital getting an epidural.

I strongly urge you to reconsider your opinion. You are being extremely unfair to people with disabilities that aren’t obvious. Pray that you never have to learn what I’m talking about.

BLE, did you have that wrist x-ray’d for a Colles fracture? They feel like a sprain. I had one and had to drive an automatic for 5 weeks while it healed. Quite painful.

Seeing transmission as the number one issue for some Chryslers and hondas I just might get a manual. @same sure I know some with hc plates, that do not look disabled at first glance, but have afflictions, It is hard o judge from the sidelines. One time I did judge, car parks in hc stall with a mirror hanger, no one over 26 my guess, 6 people ran from the car to the restaraunt entrance because it was raining. Borrowed mom’s car and sticker my first thought.

For people who really feel the need to shift gears, I sell a $25 conversion kit, plus shipping and handling, that will convert an automatic transmission to a manual. I purchase the parts at WalMart for $5. The parts consist of a short handled plumber’s plunger from the hardware department and a shift knob from the automotive department. You affix the shift knob to the handle of the plunger. You then stick the plunger to the floor of the car and you can shift gears all you want. If you trade cars, you can move my shift conversion kit to your next car. But wait! There’s more! To the next 25 customers, I,will include with thiis offer, absolutely free, a second manual shift conversion kit… You pay only shipping and handling.

keith: Yesterday a buddy dropped by with the very nice Nissan 350Z roadster he bought a few months ago. He “forced” me to drive it around the countryside top down with 62F and sunny weather. The really impressive 6 speed A/T was painful as in embarrassing for me. I kept pushing the dead pedal with my left foot and grasping the shifter!

I had to Google “Colles fracture” but yes, they X-rayed the injury at the emergency room and the doctor saw no evidence of a fracture. It’s not unbearably painful, it just hurts a little when I go through certain motions. And now that I went trap shooting on Saturday, SWMBO accepts no excuses to get out of cutting the grass.

The price we pay for living inside the house and getting 3 squares…

Is Mrs. Triedaq wondering why her plungers keep disappearing?

Somebody help me, please. I’m low-tech here, by choice. I’m not good at emojis or whatever these thing are. What the heck is SWMBO ? I tried, but all I come up with is Single White Male Bored Ocelot. That doesn’t seem right, eh? Translation please?

I don’t know what W, M and B mean, but I suppose SO could mean “significant other”

I like SWMNBN better

I think Harry mentioned it awhile back . … She Who Must Not Be Named

In military correspondence an acronym is spelled out then followed by the actual acronym such as All Boys Can’t Dance (ABCD). The acronym may then be used in the remainder of the document.

It’s that way in most professional correspondence. But, hey, this ain’t a English forum!
