Noisy, ticking, speedometer

I have a 1981 Chevy Malibu that I love. The original speedometer was replaced in 2005 because,as it got old, it was constantly ticking. The so called “new” speedometer constantly ticks at all speeds. I was told to wait until the grease worked its way into the speedometer; and that should stop the ticking. I have been waiting two years, and the ticking never ceases (which bothers me greatly.) Most mechanics don’t seem to want to bother fixing this problem; because they feel that it is not worth it. I, however, do feel that it is worth it, and I would like to know if anyone knows how to quiet my ticking speedometer? Please help!

[b]A worn speedometer cable can also make a ticking noise.

Possibly the old speedometer was OK all the time and the ticking noise was due entirely to a worn speedometer cable.
