I drive a 2016 Toyota Camry SE - 2.5L I4 (2AR-FE). Last week I was driving when this happened. You can hear the noise in the attached video. I’ve never heard this sound before, and it hasn’t happened again since.
As soon as it happened, I pulled into a gas station and took a look around. I didn’t see anything obvious-no leaks, no fluid on the ground, and nothing stuck under the car.
At the same time, I noticed the rpms bounce between 1k up to 3k twice before I came to a stop. I put it in park, then back into drive, and after that everything seemed normal again.
If anyone has any idea what this could have been, that’d be great. The noise hasn’t happened again since. If you need any more details about the car or its history, just ask.

I only heard a noise twice about the 0.04 mark, is that the noise you meant???..
I also heard what sounded like the transmission go to a false neutral while turning the corner, is that what you meant by the rpms bounce between 1k up to 3k???
Need to use a good scanner to check for current codes, pending codes and history codes… Check the freeze frame (scanner)…
Back in Jan 2025 you made a post about “flushing the transmission”, you never replied what you ended up doing that I saw, any updates on what happened there??
According to your mileage then, are you around 75k to 80k miles on the vehicle now??
How much have you driven it since the issue happened???
If you turn the volume high you’ll hear two different noises, atleast that’s what i think. The first sounds something quite literally bouncing and the second like you said the transmission. The rpms fluctuated between about 1,000 and 3,000 RPM.
I checked scanner there are no codes or freeze frames.
As for the transmission post I ended up just doing a drain and fill. I ended up having the service done at 61,000 miles by a shop.
The vehicle currently has 116,450 miles. The issue occurred at 116,116 miles. So I’ve driven about 334 miles since it then.
I do rideshare so I rack up a lot of miles. I do most maintenance myself.
Am I overreacting or is this something to worry about?
Sounds like it’s time for another drain and fill.
My volume was at 100% while watching the video multiple times…
The 2nd noise I heard while you were turning the corner was the engine revving (aka false neutral)…
Hopefully your shop used the correct Toyota WS fluid and didn’t use an universal ATF… And put a 1/2 quart more than what came out of it and let the extra come to a drip at the correct temp for checking the ATF level, if not they may not have put the correct amount back in it…
Please confirm the noises you heard by the time (example, 0.4 second mark)…
What scanner did you use?? dies it have the capability of showing pending codes and history codes as well as freeze frame and Live Data???
Yes the shop did use Toyota WS fluid. Just checked the work order. Not sure about how they go about changing the transmission fluid.
The noises I heard are both at 0:12 and 0:15 second mark.
I have a ANCEL AD310BT scanner. It shows live data, freeze frame. Not sure about history codes
