No more Ford

In some ways, our U. S. auto industry was better off when we had the independent manufacturers. These independents kept the big.boys on their toes. Nash pioneered the heating system that brought fresh air into the cabin from the outside as.opposed to just a box under the dashboard. Nash also integrated the heating and air conditioning and the entire system was under the hood and between the dashboard and firewall. Other cars with air conditioning had the evaporator and blower as a separate unit in the trunk. Hudson had the stepdown design with the passenger compartment between the outer frame rails. Studebaker had am automatic transmission with a lockup torque converter in 1951. If I thought long enough, I could probably come up with some other firsts that these independent manufacturers developed in my lifetime. By the way, two of the fastest cars om the road in the mid 1950s were the Studebaker Golden Hawk of 1956 and the limited edition 1957 Rambler Rebel. To an old geezer like me, todayā€™s cars arenā€™t nearly as exciting as those of the mid 1950s. However, I guess Iā€™ll machine along in my boring Toyota Sienna.

Letā€™s not forget the Nash reclining seats!

Hudson also had a ā€œfail-safeā€ braking system that automatically applied the e-brake if the hydraulic system failed.

Just remembered the Kaiser Manhattan pop-out windshield. It also had a padded dash of some sorts.

Even though Hitler was a decorated war veteran, later in his life he also did ā€œa fewā€ truly evil things

:frowning2:

That is true, but the Tucker also had those features, several years earlier!

It appears as though Iā€™m not the only natural straight man here who lets jokes sail over his head.

Excuse me but I donā€™t recall anyone comparing Hitler to Bill Clinton.
By the way, 11 of the 43 men who held the office of President to this day did not serve in the military in any capacity.

Didnā€™t Studebaker make that Budweiser wagon that those clydesdale horses pull in their commercials?

I donā€™t think it sailed over anyoneā€™s head, I just didnā€™t think we should move into WW II history after that little bit of diversion already. Thereā€™s just too much for a car talk site like WW I reparations, lack of arms by citizens, ye ole frog in the frying pan, his syphilis, Russians being worse than the Nazis afterward, and so on.

May 28th, just to bring it back to cars,

Automotive

1937
Volkswagen is founded
May 28th
On this day in 1937, the government of Germanyā€“then under the control of Adolf Hitler of the National Socialist (Nazi) Partyā€“forms a new state-owned automobile company, then known as Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH. Later that year, it was renamed simply Volkswagenwerk, or ā€œThe Peopleā€™s Car Company.ā€

Then we might remember Hitler introduced the Olympic torch.

Not loving trump or hitler, but there is gonna be some good things and some bad things if trump gets elected potus

If Trump gets elected . . .

There are some things that will happen, which many on this website think are the best thing since sliced bread was invented

And I . . . and hopefully many others on this website . . . will view those same things as the most despicable, hateful, racist, exclusionary, etc. acts, regulations, laws, etc. enacted in a long time

rather than edit my post

i will say the bad things that will happen will outweigh the good things.

Sometimes when I read all the hyperbole and drama here, I think the only thing missing is ā€œO Fortunaā€ playing in the background.

Music time?

Sure, but letā€™s keep it car related.

What hyperbole? Just repeating Trumps own message and past actions.

Oh boy. I hope you donā€™t see controlling the borders as hateful, despicable, exclusionary, etc. Its really one of the main duties of government and necessary for maintaining sovereignty. Itā€™s settled law.

In United States ex rel. Knauff v. Shaughnessy, 338 U.S. 537 (1950), the U.S. Supreme Court wrote:

At the outset we wish to point out that an alien who seeks admission to this country may not do so under any claim of right. Admission of aliens to the United States is a privilege granted by the sovereign United States Government. Such privilege is granted to an alien only upon such terms as the United States shall prescribe.

Lincoln warned about being invaded from within and thatā€™s exactly whatā€™s happening in Europe. What good would it do the world if the US becomes just another impotent country, but maybe thatā€™s what some want for their own enrichment. Soros for example.
