Does anyone know what this clicking/pinging/knocking noise is at idle and when revving? This is in park.

2018 Sentra SV 1.6L w/CVT
No overheating, only regular grade gasoline. 62k miles with correct maintenance intervals since I bought it at 10k. Can only hear the “knock” under the hood, car sounds fine while driving.
Suggest to post model-year/engine/transmission configuration. Pinging is usually caused by
- wrong grade of gasoline
- faulty ping sensor
- problematic engine timing
- overheating engine
- carbon deposits inside engine
What about the car has changed between when it didn’t ping, and now?
That isn’t a “ping” that is a tapping sound. Since there is no direction to the sound, I’d get a long skinny screwdriver and touch the blade end to various parts of the engine and the handle to your ear to pinpoint the location. Based on the noise I’d guess somewhere inside the valve cover… so lifter, rocker arm, valve, ect need replacement.

OP, is the engine oil in good condition (brownish, not black) and at the correct level on dipstick?

2018 Nissan Sentra SV. 1.6L with CVT Transmission. The idle tapping has always been there I believe since the car was around 10k miles. Goes away for short periods after oil change. The knock on rev may be new. Only noticed while diagnosing a battery voltage issue(revving to see alternator voltage).
Hi George,
Oil is in good condition, about 750 miles until the change interval. Golden-brown still, a tad over the crosshatch area. Oil is fully synthetic from a good brand.
Suggest to ask your shop to measure the oil pressure with their calibrated shop gauge. Your engine may have some bearings with too much clearance. If so, the oil pressure test would likely confirm. Hopefully that isn’t the problem (b/c that’s usually expensive to fix), and cause is too much valve clearance, accessory, or engine management fault due to bad sensor or actuator.
Has engine ever run very low on oil or overheated?
