I have a 2003 Nissan Altima (86,000 miles) that has been cutting off when I am either idling or driving very slowly (like rolling to a stop or backing out of a parking space). It just shuts off with no warning. We took it to a shop that couldn’t find any reason for it, though they did change the oil, flushed the transmission, and replaced a wheel bearing assembly that had been causing some noises. The noises are gone and the car has been riding great, but the engine has continued shutting off.
Any ideas would be welcome! Thanks!
What happens after it shuts off? Does it start right back up? Did the shop manage to replicate this problem?
What happens if you push down the gas pedal some? Will that keep it from stalling? Did the shop you went to happen to mention checking the idle air control valve?
How are all of your basic maintenance items? Spark plugs, wires, air & fuel filters?
Is the check engine light on?
It will crank back up immediately after shutting off. It didn’t happen when the shop test drove it, and it doesn’t happen all the time. It hadn’t happened in over a week, and then it happened three times in a row today. Haven’t tried pushing down the gas pedal to stop it from dying because it happens with no warning at all. They didn’t mention the idle air control valve, but they did say to bring it back if it kept dying, so I’ll make sure to ask about that. We got new spark plugs & wires just a few months ago. It has a K&N air filter. The fuel filter hasn’t been checked as far as I know. The check engine light is not on.
Thank you!
I am having this same problem with our 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5ltr. only about 50,000 miles on this car. i took it too the shop and they couldn’t find anything wrong either. it only dies sometimes and can be started right back up. this is very strange. if anyone gets any updated info on this issue, I would appreciate hearing about it . thanks
