this is from edmunds.com info specifically for honda CRV
it’s impossible for me to drum up sympathy in a case like this.
your mom either chooses to not believe what will happen or opts to ignore the advice so what is one to do.
this kind of falls into that “wet paint, do not touch” sign category. you know someone is going to do it anyway.

Well? That didn’t work!

Hi there, thanks for the advice but i’m an only child, not working, and my parents are divorced and i’m sure my dad will be damned before he puts any money into her car. What a bummer huh?
Print out these pages and show them to mom. This is something that can’t be ignored. It won’t let you.
Sure, it’s expensive. It’s preventive maintenance. The price of the maintenance to repair the engine, if ignored, is much, much, higher.
When the timing belt is changed, other preventive maintenance should be performed: 1. water pump, 2. radiator hoses, 3. “fan belts”, 4. drain and replace engine coolant, 5. odds and ends.
Timing belt replacement will cost from $400 to $700. Choose an independent shop, not a Honda dealer. No matter how much you love said Honda dealer, he’ll be much more expensive, and perform the job no better than an independent repair shop.
Yea we’ve always gone to an independent shop, it is within walking distance of our house too.
Gotta agree with OK here (as I usually do). Also, I don’t think the gift idea is a good one either. If she doesn’t see the importance of this preventative maintenance, she won’t appreciate it in gift form either. She might even be upset that you “wasted” that much money on the belt, etc. Buy her a day at the spa instead.
Nice picture Tester, but it’s not going to convince anyone who doesn’t already know why they should change their timing belt. In fact, you’d probably have to explain to them that all those exhaust valves are not supposed to be open at once, and then what an exhaust valve is, etc.
