Need a shelf for my 2017 Ford Escape

I have a 2017 Ford Escape (I think SE).
My elderly mom has a Rollator which does fold up nicely. This isn’t a post to about how jealous I am, I want to find a good way to store it in my car. I want some kind of shelf, but can’t find anything like that.

I have stuff stored in the back and I put groceries there and other stuff. I want a shelf above that, which I can lay the Rollator on top of. As it stands, I can fit the Rollator by laying it on my stuff, but I don’t want to. I want a shelf. For a reasonable price. Something like this guy did (but not really able to build things myself): A near perfect rear storage solution for under $150... | Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum

Any suggestions?

Measure just how much room you have in the back. Then go to Amazon and look at kids tables and you might find one to fit as a shelf.

Here’s one on eBay. Maybe your Escape already has the grooves they mention. My guess is that your car has them.

That cover will not hold a Rollator ( which is a 3 wheel walker for handicap people ).

Ok. I didn’t check what a Rollator is and assumed incorrectly it is a cargo cover. After looking it up, I’d get a couple-a-three totes with tops that are tall enough to store stuff, but not so tall that the Rollalator would slide over the rear seat and hit the driver or passengers. It looks like the guy with the FJ has two wide totes. Something like the tote below, properly sized for the Escape cargo area.

Technically it’s a 4 wheel. It’s at most 25 pounds. That cover probably won’t hold 25 pounds.

Mr. Sanders is the one who said security cover because he did not know what a Rollator was. If you do talk to anyone else be sure to let them know you are talking about a wheeled walker.

What’s in the back seat? Seems to me that if it folds up well, I’d find a way to strap it upright once folded up to the back of the front seats - or “a” front seat if the size is right.

If you do want/find some kind of a shelf, be sure that there is a way to firmly secure everything. The last thing you need is to get hit in the back of the head with the stuff in the event of sudden stop or accident.

The best way would be to have the wheeled walker under the shelf and the groceries ( which is a word someone just invented recently) on the shelf .

There are these, not sure of weight capacity. Wheathertek seems to have one, perhaps you can claa them and ask. Amazon.com: kongka Cargo Cover for 13-17 Ford Escape Cargo Cover Black Trunk Shielding Shade : Automotive

Ah, yes. I remember: “An old fashioned term that we use – groceries…used…on the [presidential] campaign. It’s such an old fashioned term, but a beautiful term. Groceries. It says a bag with different things in it.

The brilliance is … so… well, brilliant. Who ever knew what “groceries” even were before?

A cargo cover will not work to support the weight plus the parts of the walker will punch holes in the cover.

Ding ding ding, I was racking my brain trying to figure out some kind of fancy get up I needed to put groceries in the bed of my truck so the bags would not fall over and stuff go everywhere…

Wifey bought 4 big totes to store stuff in and I stole them from her, they work great and are about an inch or two shorter than the bed rails so even with a bed cover they fit and can be removed easily and with the tops on them, they can act as a shelf… And very affordable also…

I don’t think putting those plastic lidded totes in the back will meet what Sunday Driver wants to do. I think they want to put things in and take them out without having to move the other stuff.

I think Bing or myself could make a shelf that would solve the problem . By the question it appears that folding the rear seats down is not an option for the OP.

Find a body shop that’s not too busy. Ask how much they’d charge to fabricate one for you.

Your cargo area looks like this?

Buy a cheap table like this, cut the legs to the height you need and pop the rubber caps back onto the ends. Viola (sic)-

I think @sundayDriver like the idea. He liked my post. See #5 above.

I did like it, and am still considering what I’ve read here. To be fair, though, I’ve upvoted all responses, since I appreciate the time you all take to answer me and figure at the least I can give you a thumbs up.

Well I think I would consider talking to a cabinet maker. It wouldn’t be hard to just build a frame with a couple of drawers sized the way you want and on drawer slides. You could use the Rubbermaid containers as inserts if you wanted and a carpeted plywood top. I would hinge the top though in the center to make it easy to put in and take out. You’d want to minimize weight though so nothing massive, just cheap cabinet framing.

In our camper I made quite a few cabinet modifications so you might get an idea looking at an rv o4 talking to a dealer. Yeah I’m into cabinets and this wouldn’t be that hard to do for a wood worker.

A custom stereo shop or interior shop would probably be the best place to have something built, they build custom stuff for vehicles every day… Unless of course you go the DIYer route…
