My whining rear axle

I have a Mustang 98 with about 110K miles.

For the last couple of months, I hear a whine coming from the back axle (I believe passenger side) when I start moving from a dead stop, It’s a short one, a single 1 second whine, I wonder if there is something worn out that needs changing.

Anybody has any ideas what it can be, how urgent is this?

When was the last time you had the rear axle gear lube changed? Once the whine starts, which is usually a bearing going bad, it may be too late to change the lube. You may need to get the bearings checked as well. I would get this looked at, since it will only get worse.

what kind of money this type of work usually takes?

This problem may bother you and may turn into something but, rear axels can whine for many thousands of miles and never fail.

A whine that is as minor as you describe fits into the nusiance field.IMHO

You can’t tell how much it’s going to cost until you get in there and look. Hell, you might take the brakes apart and find something there is causing the noise.
