I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX with 200,000 miles. Lately, when I start of to work, I put it in D4 and it stays in 2nd for 3/4 mile and then it operates normally for the rest of the day. Except it doesn’t seem to know when to downshift in to 3rd when I go slower.
I have an Sports switch on the shifter. the light toggles on and off as it should.

Seriously, have you checked your transmission fluid? Is it low? Does it look old and smell burnt? When was the transmission fluid last changed?
