You do realize that the TV you own does not get free cable or satellite channels, you have to pay for most channels now, not to mention HBO/MAX etc etc cost even more on top of the basic paid for channels…
My truck has XM radio or whatever for a $$ monthly or yearly fee, but guess what, it still has the same free damn radio stations that your Caprice has!!! It also has free car play, does your car have free car play, mine does and guess what, it can use the maps from my phone as well as Pandora music etc etc for,------------------- wait for it-------------------- FREE!!!
That’s Millennial-think (yes I know you are older than myself!).
I’ve been using a terrestrial rooftop antenna to get broadcast TV since the last Bush finished their term. A one time investment in a decent antenna, 50 to 100 feet of coax, a balun if necessary, and you got TV beamed directly into your home forever.
And only a small % of what I watch, I have Roku with Sling plus some added movie channels, not to mention I DVR most stuff I watch cause I HATE commercials with a passion, so I FF through them using the DVR, or I watch Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount, Disney+, and many more for the family…
I dislike most Broadcast TV channels except for the CBS stuff like NCIS, Criminal Minds, Swat, that kind of stuff, but again, that is either DVR’d or I can watch it on Paramount with timed/limited commercials, at least it tells you how long you have to go do something, plus you can binge watch stuff unlike watch one show and then wait a week to see what happens next… and Netflix has zero commercials…
I also like my Motor Trend and some of the Discovery stuff…
Soooo, NO thank you, I will stick with technology…
And besides, as young or old as I am, I grew up with rabbit ears and 5 channels on a good day, and never saw cable unless at a friends house in another city, ours was late to the game, so I never had cable or satellite until I was in my mid to late 20’s, and ever since worked hard to make sure I could have stuff like cable TV etc… lol
Do you know how many Head Bangers Ball videos I missed growing up, and I swore I would never let my kids be deprived of the basics in life as I was…
As a teenager, I remember there was always “that guy” that could fiddle around and “get” the good channels, but it was mostly snow and no sound and every once in awhile you could barely make out something. An overactive imagination was also a requirement
I have a hybrid thing going on, the smart Samsung coupled with broadcast. Since I stick to decades- established media sources and avoid the opinion and propaganda peddlers, it’s important that I have both over air and online access to the established sources.
On the net, as they say, there’s as many opinions as 'AH’s, so one has to be careful not to get caught up in to much of that.
Maybe so, but if my TV has a sleep timer It will continue to work even without a subscription. All the features work, its my atV even if i unhook it from the internet.
I only reluctantly hooked it up to the internet recently so I can watch some old shows on the youtube.
I don’t like it but I caved to it.
I can work with certain things, my vehicle have disc brakes on all 4 wheels and the caprice has rear drums. Even though i know that drums are a much more efficient brake i will still own a vehicle with discs.
I am however very thankful the dump truck I drive has powerful, efficient and SAFE drum brakes. But I’m not a total ludite
… and yet, Teslers have many of the “whiz-bang” features that you have already ruled-out with your edicts. In fact, Tesler vehicles have many additional electronic/technologic features that go beyond the features that you have already railed against.
I own a Model 3, bought in 2023. My solution is a trunk magnet with a message that distances me from Musk: “bought when he was just quirky”.
I don’t base my purchasing decisions on politics and generally not on morality issues. You can’t buy a Ford because Henry hated Jews so much. You can’t buy a German car because all of them were part of the Nazi war machine. Toyota was a major supplier to the Japanese government during WWII, and Honda was a major supplier to Toyota then. Subaru is Fuji Heavy Industries, also a major supplier tho the Japanese military during WWII.
Back to Teslas. The controls are almost all on the central screen, including the speedometer. I like it, but you said that you didn’t. Here’s a photo of a Model Y controls screen. My M3 is about the same.
Given current developments, I’d rather keep $5,000 in the bank and buy a cheaper Chinese electric if I was into those things, and not worry about having the fire dept. come out and check out my new ride!
If and/or when @Old-Days-Rick 's 1989 Chevy Caprice finally bites the dust, gets wrecked or he can finally no longer keep it going, he’ll most likely buy a new or much newer vehicle that’s safer, faster, more comfortable, more economical to operate . . . and he’ll really like it
That’s what happened to me recently
And that’s what happens to the vast majority of people with older cars, imo
Go to any local pick a part junkyard
They’re full of old cars that got wrecked, parts were no longer obtainable, expenses far exceeded the value of the car, etc.
People generally move on from old cars . . . and that’s perfectly normal
… and it will be much more technological, whether he likes it or not.
When I bought my current vehicle, it came equipped with several high-tech options that I wouldn’t have bought if I had the choice. However, I like every high-tech feature of this vehicle, including those that I thought I wouldn’t like or wouldn’t need.
If one argues that Japanese, German and Italian cars shouldn’t be bought because we fought them in WW2, then British cars should also be out of consideration, as they fought to prevent us from being our own country
And what about American cars . . . we, as a country, have “occasionally” been on the wrong side of things, as well
Some people are very good at rationalizing, but their mental gymnastics are frequently based on a lack of knowledge. I used to know a woman who said that she couldn’t buy a Mercedes because of their Nazi affiliations, and that she would buy a BMW instead. When I showed her that BMW was just as involved with the arming of the Nazis as Mercedes was, she declared that this was “fake news”.
