A 5W20 oil need not be synthetic or semi-synthetic. But the base oil must be of good quality. Hydrotreated base stocks do very well.
A 0W20, on the other hand, must be synthetic to be able to stay in grade at high temperatures.
Base stocks now do not need to be POAs (polyalphaolefins); some other mineral based ones come very close.
