Its a remap of your engine performance typically to increase performance inside a computer chip that controls your engine. Dependant on how good the programmer/tuner of chip is it can have little - large effect on longevity of the vehicle. It will void any related power train warranties you have.
I have driven Subaru WRX’s with a mod chip and drive ability is significantly improved with better torque(lower RPM) and better HP(lower RPM) with a slight bump in numbers. Subaru’s factory settings are tuned for the lowest emissions possible to make the vehicle although not required a ULEV car.
