Mechanic destryoed my engine tuning a DOD delete that he performed

He replaced cam, lifters, heads, springs, etc. I know my heads could have been used. Heade.it seem that if i wanted to keep the vehicle abother 100k plus though, the extra $ today would be advised. Je assured me the bottom.end was good though before hand. Hence my apprehension to proceed? Or should i even trust him if he does try to make it right? Im having a hard time paying for this job as well… even the parts that now seem worthless.

Those guys that didn’t want to take the job were the SMART ones

Part of being a good mechanic is knowing which jobs to TURN AWAY

Just an FYI, the heads must come off to replace the DOD lifters on a GM V8. Maybe the heads needed a skim cut or valve job and swapping for reman heads was more economical.

I’ll second that. And note that it’s quite possible that the EPA doesn’t care any longer.

Instead of better homes and gardens this is now ask the lawyer. Like reporting someone to the IRS, they may also look at you. Normally a guy doesn’t work on an engine unless someone hires him to.

You agreed to pay $X amount for a running driving vehicle, once he provides you with that, then he should get paid that amount…

But it is not your fault that he screwed up, no different then if he was doing an engine swap and his cherry picker tipped over or a seal blew out and he dropped the new engine, braking an ear off the bell housing or whatever making it a paperweight, it is his responsibility to make it right…

A co worker sent his Q50 Red Sport out of state to be modded to 800 HP at the flywheel, well it kicked a rod and the engine was replaced under warranty, then the flex fuel sensor malfunctioned (gave the wrong E%) and it kicked another rod out the block, the shop ate that one, so they settled on a safe 691rwhp, which is over 800 at the crank…
Point is, he only paid for the agreed amount of $25K for everything, they did not charge him for the new engine, not used, or towing to the dealer and getting it replaced under warranty…
It was banned from the drag strip for being too fast with out a roll cage in it… lol

I assume these other shops suggested to replace the engine, and the customer simply didn’t want to hear that. It sounds like that is what was needed all along.

Great story about your friend. And thank you for your thoughts. Hopefully when i speak to the mexhanic tomorrow he feels the need to make things right also.

I watched a few videos about dod delete jobs. Cheap, cheaper and cheapest versions. Guys seem to like swapping in ported heads. So, you have a caddy truck with no motor. Seems like a tough spot. Paying for job was tight. And now you need motor. And I’m dragging my feet buying a used motor for $300.
